LHCH Launches New Electronic Patient Record
Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to announce the successful launch of its state-of-the-art electronic patient record (EPR) system.
The new and innovative system, one of the most advanced in the country to be implemented, is a major step forward for the Trust and will really help with how patient and family centred care is delivered.
In changing the way that it provides care, thousands of previously paper-based records, patient documentation, test results, prescriptions, orders and integrated care pathways have now been included in the Trust’s new EPR system.
“Our mission is to provide excellent, safe and compassionate care for every patient every day,” said Raj Jain, Chief Executive at the Trust.
“This new system will support staff to make even better use of their talent and expertise and will enable patients and their families to feel even more that ‘my care was planned with me and for me’.
“It is a fantastic opportunity for our teams to take this hospital onto even more success for the patients and families for whom we care.”
The Trust worked closely with Allscripts - one of the leading electronic patient record companies in the US – during a process of research, planning and evaluation, and a mere 15 months since the actual project start date.
The system has been developed to allow healthcare professionals throughout the hospital to deliver in electronic form what has previously done by paper-based records.
By removing these paper-based systems and introducing a new EPR system, staff and patients at the Trust will benefit significantly.
It will:
• enable staff to spend more time with patients and their families
• ensure that patients are not asked for the same information more than once when they see different health professionals, as everything will be held in one central place
• speed up the time for x-rays and blood tests, for example, to be ordered
• remove the time taken to find a patient’s case notes.
Dr Johan Waktare, Consultant Cardiologist and Clinical Lead for EPR, said “Quality of care and the experience of our patients are the two core guiding principles for our work.
“That’s why this project, from the outset, has been driven by a team of our senior clinicians, along with fantastic engagement with our executive directors, nursing, medical, non-clinical staff and allied health professionals.”
He added: “It is also important to emphasise that it is thanks to the strength of our partnership with Allscripts that we have been able to deliver this new project. They were the right partner and their system has proved to be the right tool for us to deliver in electronic form what we previously did with paper-based records.
“It will help us continue delivering excellent, compassionate and safe care for all our patients.”
