When fluid is removed from around the lung, it is known as a pleural aspiration.
A biopsy may be taken from the pleura (the lining around the lung) at the same time. A biopsy is a sample of tissue that has been taken for examination in the laboratory for testing.
When you get home from the hospital
- You should rest and take it easy
- You may eat and drink as normal
The following day
- You can resume your normal activities
- You may have a small plaster on your back where the procedure was performed. and you may remove this.
Additional Information
- You may experience some discomfort in the area where the procedure was performed. We suggest that you take simple painkillers such as Paracetamol (Panadol) regularly to relieve the discomfort. Be careful not to exceed the recommended dose stated on the container and check you are not taking any other medication containing Paracetamol.
- If you become more short of breath than you normally are, you should contact your G.P. (own doctor).
- As part of this procedure you may have had a biopsy taken from your lung, which has been sent for examination.
- If a biopsy has been performed it is important that you attend your outpatient appointment for the results. This will be arranged with you before you leave the ward.
- If you are unable to attend for your outpatient appointment please ring the Consultant’s secretary.
