We provide care for medical patients

We care for a wide range of medical patients, both male and female, who have separate sleeping accommodation and hygiene facilities.

Our patients include:

  • Those requiring transfer from other Trusts for coronary intervention procedures.
  • Patients awaiting coronary artery bypass surgery.
  • Those who require monitoring and treatment of abnormal heart rhythms, either by ablation procedures or permanent pacemaker      implant.
  • Patients with chronic conditions such as heart failure, COPD or cancer.
  • Cystic Fibrosis patients.
  • Day Case procedures.

Please ensure you have your outside clothes and shoes available for your discharge home. Wherever possible, patients need to arrange their own transport for discharge home. You will be asked to confirm this on admission. Only in exceptional circumstances can staff arrange transport.

Family Information

As a family member, carer or friend of a patient, we know that your needs are also important, especially during this often stressful time. We want you to feel part of their journey through our hospital and be as involved in their care as you would like to be. On Birch Ward we promote ‘Patient and Family Centred Care’ and encourage patients and family members to be active partners in care whilst in hospital. Patient, family and carers are encouraged to be involved in decision making as much as possible. This will enable us to plan individualised nursing care for your relative or friend, and to assess what information and support will be necessary to continue their recovery at home. We encourage you to ask questions, and we endeavour to keep patients and their families or carers updated with all relevant information. Please do not hesitate to ask any members of staff should you need any assistance.

Visiting Times

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital operates an open door policy for family and friends. This means that wherever possible, we welcome you spending time with your loved ones when it is convenient for you.

While we know that patients need rest, we also believe that having loved ones nearby, while they are in hospital, often makes them more comfortable and speeds up their recovery.

As a family member, carer or friend of a patient, we know that your needs are also important, especially during this often stressful time. We want you to feel part of their journey through our hospital and be as involved in their care, and we call this our Care Partner Programme. More information about this is available on the ward.

There may be times when we may ask you to leave, for example, during medical procedures or emergencies. However if this is necessary, we would discuss it with you at the time.

Please note that you are welcome on our Critical Care Unit and POCCU between 8-9am and 12-8pm. However if this is not suitable, you may visit outside of these hours – please discuss this with the nurse caring for your relative.

Access to the Ward
  • Stairs and lift to first floor, near reception, just inside the main entrance.
  • Out of hours a swipe control access is in place.
  • Any visitors outside of normal visiting hours must use the buzzer to contact a member of the ward staff to gain access to the ward.
