Top hospital for care and treatment of patients

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) NHS Foundation Trust has once again scored amongst the very best NHS trusts in the country, according to the Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) latest National Inpatient Survey, a position it has held for the last nine years.

The annual survey asked the views of a sample of 850 adults who had stayed overnight as an inpatient at LHCH. Feedback received from patients showed that the hospital was one of the highest performing in the country and THE best place to receive care and treatment.

Out of 154 trusts, the results for LHCH showed that:

  • it was rated top in the country for ‘nurses within the hospital’ category
  • it was rated top in the country for ‘care and treatment of our patients’ category
  • it was rated top in the country for cleanliness of wards
  • it was rated the second best trust in the country for ‘overall patient care’
  • it was rated ‘better’ than the majority of trusts in all 11 survey sections

The survey looks at areas such as admission to hospital, the hospital ward, doctors and nurses, care and treatment, operations and procedures, leaving hospital, as well as the overall patient experience. It aims to highlight what patients think about the care and treatment they receive and the feedback helps trusts to understand where improvements can be made.

Director of Nursing & Quality, Sue Pemberton, said: “Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital is committed to delivering the best care possible for our patients and families.

“This year we have developed our Care Partner Programme, by inviting families and carers to participate in their relative’s care if they wish to do so. Our patient and family centred care approach led the way to open visiting in the hospital. We have encouraged patient and family shadowing to enable our staff to see care through a patient’s eyes, and we also actively encourage patients and families to let us know if they have any concerns about their care whilst in our hospital.”

“Whilst we are proud that our patients have highlighted the quality of our care and services once again this year, we are not complacent. We know that further improvements to patient care and services can always be made, and that is why gathering their views, based on their experiences, is so important to us.”
