Outcomes
Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital is proud to have some of the best outcomes for cardiac surgery in the country. The risk-adjusted survival rate was 97.8%
“In 2014, adjusted survival 30 days after lung cancer surgery in this hospital was significantly better than the national average. The difference seen is higher than we would expect just by chance. This hospital is therefore a positive outlier on this outcome measure (defined as outside a confidence interval of 99.8%).”

Outcomes for cardiac surgery in the United Kingdom are probably the most closely regulated surgery of any type anywhere in the world. The Society of Cardio-Thoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (www.scts.org) requires every cardiac surgery unit in the country to submit detailed reports of every patient operated on by every surgeon. All surgeons are required to remain within a tight range of outcomes and as outcomes improve, the benchmarks for all surgeons in the country and adjusted to reflect the higher standards.
In addition, the hospital itself has internal quality control measures that mean that every surgeon’s outcomes are examined regularly and in a public forum to identify where improvements can be made.
Cardiac surgery is, by its nature, a high risk specialty and LHCH ensures that wherever learning can be distributed to others - whether that is identifying the reasons for excellent outcomes and distributing that information; or in determining the root causes of any problems that might have been encountered and ensuring they do not happen again.
