Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital Joins CIRSE Fellowship Training Programme

We are delighted to announce that Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) has successfully joined the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) fellowship grant programme as a recommended training centre for image-guided lung biopsies.  This follows confirmation from CIRSE who have named LHCH on its official list of recommended training centres.

The new fellowship training programme aims to welcome one or two international fellows each year who will be supported by external CIRSE fellowship funding.  Each fellow will have a dedicated mentor providing overall guidance, career advice and professional development support, alongside a separate clinical supervisor responsible for day-to-day clinical training, procedural supervision and patient safety.  The programme will also create opportunities for research, clinical audits and shared learning.

Achieving this milestone required a consultant faculty member to pass the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR) examination and changes to clinical workflow to provide one dedicated lung biopsy slot each day.

This is a true multidisciplinary team achievement, made possible by the contributions of consultant radiologists, respiratory physicians, thoracic surgeons, lung cancer screening services, radiographers, nursing staff, administrative teams, radiology support staff, porters and wider hospital support staff.

Members of the LHCH Radiology team said:

“This is excellent news for LHCH and our Radiology service.  Due to the highly specialist work of our team, providing training and education to share our knowledge and expertise in cardiothoracic radiology is vital."

“In recognition of the dedication of Dr Sukumaran Binukrishnan, Consultant Radiologist at LHCH, and to mark his significant contribution to establishing and developing our lung biopsy service, the fellowship will be dedicated to him locally and known as the Dr Binu Lung Biopsy Fellowship."

“This is a proud moment for our team and a welcome opportunity to share our experience with colleagues from across Europe.”
