National Respiratory Physiology training for Speech and Language Therapists hosted at LHCH

Today, we were excited to host an ‘Introduction to Respiratory Physiology for Speech and Language Therapists (SLT)’ course here at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

It’s the first time LHCH has provided this course in partnership with the National SLT Respiratory Clinical Excellence Network (CEN).

SLT professionals joined us from across the country to explore how breathing patterns, lung function and respiratory control impact the upper airway. The session covered essential concepts of respiratory anatomy, physiology and practical applications for therapists working with patients with upper airway disorders.

Teaching Faculty included Joanne Clayton, ACP SLT; Scott Hawkes, Advanced Physiologist – Exercise Service Lead, Wayne Donnelly, Senior Chief Respiratory Physiologist; Yasser Yousif, Senior Chief Respiratory Physiologist; Paul Lang, Senior Clinical Scientist and Dorothy Price, Respiratory Diagnostics Service Lead.

Dorothy Price, Respiratory Diagnostics Manager spoke of the course:

“We are proud to have had the opportunity to share our knowledge and expertise, in respiratory physiology, to develop speech and language therapists from across the country.

“The session has been ideal for professionals looking to enhance their clinical practice in this area.

“It’s also been a fantastic opportunity to showcase the Continuous laryngoscopy during exercise (CLE) tests which are offered onsite here and are only available in a handful of hospitals across the country due to its specialism.”
