Students target one million metre rowing milestone
A group of Cheshire students are set to take on a mammoth charity ‘rowathon’ that will see them stroke up to one million metres in 24 hours!
The rowing enthusiasts, from Years 10-13 at The Grange School, Hartford, plan to smash the million metre milestone from the School’s indoor rowing gym on Saturday 19th March.
Starting at 8am, and working through the day and night, 20 students using a series machines, will row the 622 miles – equivalent to rowing to Zurich or the Faroe Islands – all in aid of LHCH Charity.
Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) is one of the leading specialist cardiothoracic centres in the country and twice rated ‘Outstanding’ for the heart and chest services provided to patients across Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and the Isle of Man.
In 2021, the School chose to support LHCH Charity for the year. Through a variety of fundraising events, including a 24 hour row supported by Olympic gold medallist, James Cracknell, the students raised an impressive £4,500 - but this year they wanted to do even better.
Ben Scawn, 17, a Year 13 student and one of the instigators behind the challenge said: “Following our success last year, and knowing how much of a difference our support would make to people living with heart and lung disease, we were determined to try and make it bigger and better this year.
“I understand how difficult it has been for LHCH, along with the rest of the NHS, throughout the pandemic. As a group of students, we just wanted to do something to show our support and gratitude.
“Rowing one million metres in 24 hours is a daunting task, but thankfully we have a huge amount of support from students and staff across the School. We’re already looking forward to it, even the blisters!”
Miss Kat Huntriss, Head of Upper Sixth, said: “I’m so proud of the students for taking on another amazing charity challenge.
“I know the amount of hard work and effort that went in last time and witnessed the sore hands and aching limbs at the end. So, for the students to put in even more hours of training and take their rowing challenge to another level is truly inspiring.”
