Chief Executive Liz Bishop has announced that she will retire on 28th March 2025 after 42 years of service in the NHS.

Liz joined Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital as Chief Executive in February 2024 – in a role she shared jointly with her leadership responsibilities at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.

A cancer nurse by background, Liz first joined the NHS in the early 1980s. After many years caring for patients, Liz moved in management roles and held a number of senior roles at London teaching hospitals, driven by a desire to improve the experiences and outcomes of people with cancer.

Liz became Deputy Chief Executive of The Royal Marsden in London, before joining The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre as Chief Executive in 2018.

Liz developed a wealth of NHS leadership experience and knowledge, particularly regarding the Cheshire and Mersey health system. As the senior responsible officer for the Cheshire & Merseyside Cancer Alliance, Liz has been pivotal in overseeing the whole cancer ‘pathway’, from screening and diagnosis, through to treatment and other wraparound services. Furthermore, in recent years, she actively supported strong relationships with clinical teams at LHCH, the development of dedicated cardio-oncology services, and the continued growth of lung cancer services.

Liz Bishop, Chief Executive of Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, said:

“LHCH has been a wonderful place to work and I have been privileged to serve as Chief Executive.

“I have been surrounded by unbelievably talented and dedicated teams who are totally committed to achieving the best for the patients and communities we serve.

"Outstanding patient care is delivered by outstanding teams, and I can testify to the very highest levels of excellence and professionalism throughout every ward and department here at LHCH.

“I will miss work, but look forward to spending more time with those close to me once I retire.”

Val Davies, Chair of Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, said:

“Those who know Liz, and who have worked with her here at LHCH, at Clatterbridge, and through her other NHS roles, will know that she has been an inspirational leader. She has always put patients first and genuinely cares about improving health outcomes, making things better, as well as looking after her staff.

“Here at LHCH, Liz was able to build on strong foundations that were already in place, provided stability after a period of change at LHCH, and at the same time established a really strong leadership team. Liz also ensured that the outstanding care and services that have characterised our Trust for many years have continued.

“Liz has been totally committed to thinking about the whole patient and family experience and has actively supported collaborative working with health and social care partners locally, regionally and nationally.

“On behalf of the Trust Board and everyone at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, I want to express my sincere thanks to Liz and wish her a long, happy and healthy retirement.”

Arrangements for the appointment of Liz’s successor will be announced in due course.
