LHCH is one of the country’s TOP trusts

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital has once again been named one of the BEST hospitals in the country, according to the results of this year’s national NHS Adult Inpatient Survey 2023.

The survey, published today - August 21st, showed that LHCH was TOP in the country for the ‘confidence and trust that patients had in the doctors treating them’. It was also one of the top four trusts in the country overall.

The results also recognised LHCH as SECOND in the country for the ‘Hospital and Ward’ section, and also for the following two questions:

  • Were you able to get hospital food outside of set meal times?
  • Thinking about your care and treatment, were you told something by a member of staff that was different to what you had been told by another member of staff?

LHCH was recognised as one of the TOP THREE trusts in the country for the following two sections:

  • Your care and treatment
  • Kindness and compassion

LHCH was also in the top three trusts for 7 questions:

  • Were you ever prevented from sleeping at night by any of the following?
    • Noise from other patients.
  • Were you ever prevented from sleeping at night by any of the following?
    •  I was not prevented from sleeping.
  • Did the hospital staff explain the reasons for changing wards during the night in a way you could understand?
  • During your time in hospital, did you get enough to drink?
  • In your opinion, were there enough nurses on duty to care for you in hospital?
  • Did the hospital staff take into account your existing individual needs?
  • Overall, did you feel you were treated with kindness and compassion while you were in the hospital?

Furthermore, LHCH received the second highest response rate in the country.

Patients were asked for their views on various aspects of their care, with trusts then listed in one of seven categories - from ‘much better than expected’ down to ‘much worse than expected’ - based on the proportion of patients who responded positively compared to the average.

Joan Matthews, Director of Nursing and Quality at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, said: “First of all, I would like to pass on my thanks to all those patients who took the time to share their experience with us.

“Whilst we are hugely grateful for all the positive feedback that they have shared with us, it’s also really important that we listen to our patients to understand if there are areas where we can further improve their care and experience. As a Trust, we’re continually looking to improve our services, and therefore all the survey responses are invaluable.

“We know that all of our staff come to work every day to give the very best care to our patients and families. For the survey to recognise this level of care once again, is very pleasing.”

Liz Bishop, Chief Executive, added: “I’m delighted that so many of our patients received excellent care at LHCH and felt able to give such positive feedback about their experience. This is something we should all be very proud.

“It’s particularly pleasing to hear the confidence that our patients had in the doctors treating them, and for how highly our hospital and wards were rated.

“We will never be complacent about the quality of care that we provide, which is testament to the outstanding culture and teams we have in place at LHCH.”

The report, published on Wednesday 21st August 2024, summarised the experiences of more than 63,000 patients from 131 acute and specialist NHS trusts who spent at least one night in hospital during November 2023.
