COPD Team wins top HSJ award

LHCH in partnership with Knowsley Care Commissioning Group, has won a prestigious national award for the work it has been doing to provide high quality care to people in their own communities with respiratory conditions.

The Knowsley Community Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Team was named the overall winner in the Respiratory Care category at last night’s Care Integration Awards 2013.

The awards, organised by the Health Service Journal and Nursing Times, were presented at Grosvenor House, London on Tuesday 9th July at a ceremony attended by more than 1,000 healthcare leaders.

In winning the accolade, our community COPD service was recognised above five other shortlisted healthcare organisations for the work it has been doing to provide a multi-disciplinary care approach for patients that is all in one place.

Since being launched two years ago, the service has also provided a greater number of consultant clinics, a 24 hour overnight helpline and a rapid response team, including a physiotherapist.

Dr Sarah Sibley, Respiratory Consultant, who received the award, said: “It's fantastic to have the work of our highly dedicated multi-disciplinary team recognised with this national award.

“The Knowsley Community COPD service is highly unique, innovative and cost effective and the model of care is transferable to other areas. Patients and their families are at the heart of everything we do and they receive high quality, specialist care close to their home.

“The team's success is due to a combination of the Knowsley Care Commissioning Group’s innovative vision and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital’s dedicated team of healthcare professionals.”

Dr Glenn Russell, the Trust’s Medical Director, added: “We launched our COPD service in 2011 with the aim of working with GPs to prevent unnecessary secondary care admissions and to provide a quality service in the community. It is therefore a fantastic achievement to receive national recognition for this important area of work which is making a real difference to our patients. Competition to win one of these awards was extremely high and the success is testament to the commitment and dedication of our staff.”

Jenni Middleton from the Nursing Times, said: “You have achieved something truly special – your efforts have given your patients and their families and friends a better experience, a safer experience, a more integrated experience of healthcare.”
