LHCH shortlisted for two HSJ Awards 2022

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) is proud to be shortlisted for Trust of the Year and the Staff Wellbeing Award at this year’s HSJ Awards, recognising outstanding contribution to healthcare and earning the opportunity to showcase their achievements on a national platform.

More than 1000 entries were received for this year’s Awards, with 219 projects and individuals making it to the final shortlist, spread across 162 organisations. The high volume - and exceptional quality – of applications is once again reflecting the breadth of innovation and care within the UK’s healthcare networks.

Now in its 42nd year, the HSJ Awards continue to provide an opportunity to shine a light on the outstanding efforts and achievements that individuals and teams deliver on a daily basis.

The judging panel was once again made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community. Following the thorough judging process, LHCH has been shortlisted for two awards. The shortlist was based on ambition; outcome; value; involvement & working together and crucially, how the project might be “picked up” and replicated elsewhere for the benefit of both patients and professional colleagues.

Trust of the Year

Throughout the pandemic, LHCH retained its vision, ‘to be the best’. Not only did LHCH respond to Covid-19 challenges by continuing to deliver world-class patient care, but outstanding leadership and focus was demonstrated in many other areas, including:

  • administering 50,000+ vaccinations through the LHCH vaccination hub for staff, NHS colleagues, frontline workers, and other priority groups
  • delivering extensive mutual aid and service support to neighbouring trusts
  • maintaining a sharp focus on patient safety and further embedding a culture of incident reporting and organisational learning
  • ensuring exceptional focus on wellbeing
  • wide-ranging green agenda contributions and recognition
  • ongoing strong financial performance.

Staff Wellbeing Award

LHCH has a strong track record of supporting our staff with a track record of excellent results in the staff survey. The impact of the pandemic cannot be under-estimated and our focus on well-being has remained critical.

Be Civil, Be Kind is a co-created, staff-led campaign that has driven a focus on behaviours which underpin the delivery of safe and effective care, enabling staff to develop and own behaviours ‘we love and expect to see’. This has resulted in positive organisational impact, reducing ‘behavioural’ factors at the root cause of incidents, and contributing to staff health and wellbeing.

Jane Tomkinson, Chief Executive at LHCH, said,

“This really is wonderful news - the fact we’ve been shortlisted for Trust of the Year and the Staff Wellbeing Award in the HSJ Awards 2022 is undoubtedly huge recognition for all our amazingly hard working and deserving teams.

“Our people always go above and beyond to improve patient outcomes and quality of service and care; and aligning with the HSJ Awards programme really allows us to share our successes as well as everything we’ve learnt and delivered over the last 12 months.”

HSJ editor Alastair McLellan, adds;

On behalf of all my colleagues, it gives me great pleasure to congratulate Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital on being shortlisted as a finalist in the category of Trust of the Year and Staff Wellbeing Award. All of the applications represent the ‘very best of the NHS’ and often leave our esteemed panel of judges with an impossible choice!

“Year on year the number of entrants continue to rise which I find so encouraging and is testament to the effect that HSJ Awards can have on improved staff culture and morale.

“We’re all very much looking forward to welcoming our finalists to the awards ceremony in November, celebrating their impressive achievements and jointly acknowledging our values of sharing best practice, improving patient outcomes and continuously driving for better service. But we never forget that the award ceremony is not just a celebration within a night, but a platform to recognise the hard work of all our NHS staff, all year round.”
