Pioneering Heart Procedure

Surgeons and cardiologists at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital recently carried out the UK’s first keyhole heart operation to successfully treat a condition affecting hundreds of thousands of people, and costing the NHS billions of pounds per year.
The operation, pioneered in the USA but now being performed in Liverpool, is designed to treat atrial fibrillation, which causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate in as many as 1.5 million people in the UK.
The procedure was featured in the Daily Mail's weekly 'Me and My Operation' section today.
