Consultant's Prestigious Award
A world leading lung cancer specialist has been recognised with a prestigious award at the recent European Lung Cancer Conference 2015 in Switzerland.
Professor Pieter Postmus, Consultant in Thoracic Oncology at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, was recognised by the European Society for Medical Oncology and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, for his outstanding contribution to lung cancer research and education.
As one of the world’s leading experts on lung cancer, Prof Postmus has been involved with the treatment of lung cancer patients since 1978. He was the Chief Thoracic Oncologist in Groningen for 10 years, and then spent 23 years as Professor in the Department of Pulmonary Diseases at VUMC in Amsterdam.
He stepped down from this role in 2014 to take up his new joint hospital position in March this year, where he now works with colleagues across Merseyside and Cheshire to improve care for lung cancer patients.
He is also Honorary Professor in Thoracic Oncology at the University of Liverpool.
Commenting on the award, Prof Postmus said: “To receive an award connected to one of my colleagues in the area of thoracic oncology is a great honour.”
The Heine H. Hansen Award was launched this year to mark the lifetime contribution of Prof Heine H. Hansen to global lung cancer research and education.
He added: “I admired Heine Hansen as a great clinical scientist and he was for me a role model. During more than 30 years I met Heine at many meetings, frequently resulting in new ideas for collaboration and clinical research.”
