James Sumner

Chief Executive

James Sumner joined Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital as its new shared Chief Executive on 1st April 2025. 

James assumed joint leadership responsibilities alongside his role as Chief Executive of NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHLG).

James has more than 20 years’ experience working across the NHS, within primary and secondary care, system improvement and integrated care roles.

He was previously Chief Executive at Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, before joining Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as Chief Executive in May 2022. He was subsequently appointed Joint Chief Executive with Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust in December 2023, and then UHLG Chief Executive in November 2024.
