Dental Service FAQs

Why do I need to see the dentist if I am having heart valve surgery?

It is important your teeth and gums are healthy and there is no evidence of infection, to minimize the serious risk of complications.

Will you carry out all the treatment required?

We will treat the source of infection if you have one and make sure you are dentally fit  for you heart valve surgery to go ahead , then you will need to find or return to your own dentist for any routine work to be completed.

In the past I’ve been given antibiotics to prevent infective endocarditis before certain dental treatment, has this changed?

There has been a current change in practice from NICE (the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence), because medical and dental procedures are no longer thought to be the main cause of endocarditis, so you will not be offered antibiotics (for further information please go to www.nice.org.uk
