Double Lung Transplant Patient Set to Scale Snowdon

Date: 05 March 2019 03:07

A double lung transplant patient with cystic fibrosis, is taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Snowdon, to say thank you to the hospitals that have cared for him.

Ben Daughtry, 36 years from Accrington, has been a patient with the cystic fibrosis service at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) since January 2018, eight months after undergoing a double lung transplant at Royal Papworth Hospital.

To show his gratitude to all the clinical teams who have played a part in his care and treatment over the years, Ben is sharing any funds raised from his charity climb, between LHCH Charity, Royal Papworth and the Wolfson Cystic Fibrosis Unit

He said: “I'm at a point where I’d like to give back to those who have saved my life and provided me with such good care and treatment over the years. I'm eternally grateful to so many NHS workers – cleaners, nurses, doctors, physiotherapists and pharmacists. Without these people, I wouldn’t be here today."

Ben, who was encouraged by a friend to take on the climb, said the challenge is going to test him both physically and mentally.

"As well as having a compromised immune system, gout and arthritis, I also have sensory neuropathy in my feet. This can make them feel like they are in flames and so much so, that at times I can't have sheets on them. Also if I'm on my feet for more than 3 to 4 hours, I start to get pressure sores.

“However I still love being outdoors and getting out in to the countryside for walks with my dog, Ellie. She’s going to be at my side doing her first climb with me as well. I just need to build up my distances gradually and make sure I’m ready for the big day in June.”

Ben added: “I just love to help those who help me. My appreciation and respect for the NHS doesn’t have a limit.”
