Dementia Friends

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (LHCH) is encouraging people in Merseyside to become more dementia friendly, by hosting a series of free ‘Dementia Friends’ information sessions.

The one-hour sessions will take place at the hospital site, Thomas Drive, Liverpool, L14 3PE, on:

  • 10th Sept 2-3pm
  • 18th Sept 2-3pm
  • 27th Sept 10-11am (Saturday morning session)
  • 6th October 2-3pm
  • 15th October 7-8pm (Evening session)
  • 4th November 2-3pm
  • 21st November 2-3pm
  • 5th December 2-3pm
  • 15th December 2-3pm

All sessions will be held in the LHCH Conference Room, Research Unit.

The Dementia Friends programme was launched in 2013 by Alzheimer’s Society to help members of the public understand what it might be like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into action.

LHCH is now supporting the charity’s aim to sign up one million Dementia Friends by 2015, making England more dementia friendly and improving the lives of hundreds of thousands of people currently living with the condition.

The hospital is also a member of Liverpool Dementia Action Alliance, which is working to make the city a dementia friendly community.

Joanne Shaw, Dementia Friends Champion at LHCH, who will be delivering the workshops, said: “Here at our hospital we regularly come into contact with patients and family members with dementia.

“We know the way we think, talk and act is so important and therefore in recent months we have been actively raising awareness and signing up our clinical staff, support staff, volunteers and governors as Dementia Friends.”

Alzheimer’s Society research shows that 800,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia, and more than half have Alzheimer’s disease. It is expected that within ten years a million people will be living with dementia and that this figure could soar to 1.7 million people by 2051.

Joanne added: “The figures show why we’re encouraging as many people as possible across the city, not just healthcare professionals, to become more dementia friendly.

“Our ‘Dementia Friends’ sessions are a perfect opportunity for local people to come and improve their knowledge. It’s not about creating experts, it’s about helping people understand a little bit more about what it’s like to live with the condition and then turn that understanding into action.”
